SoundWaves Magazine "makinG anGels" Review

The Connecticut based band synerGy has produced a self-described concept album, titled makinG anGels, over an extended period of short sessions, fulfilling an idea to tell a story of life, war, falling, redemption, and finality.  It's premise begins with a man bound for Viet Nam, the term "making angels" a reference to killing people.  The protagonist carries all the complexities, desires, fears and aversions of a young man, which create reverberations among those he makes contact with in the course of his life.

This is a monumental operatic-level undertaking for the band, recorded in a friend's basement studio in the small town of Killingly, CT.  No mention is noted of plans to move the album to a stage production, though such is the path of many such themed albums.

The album opens with an instrumental Overture, guitar-based rock that provides background to the voice of President Lyndon Baines Johnson, announcing an almost immediate increase in the number of soldiers in Viet Nam, more than doubling this nation's presence.  The past President's words add context to his own act, describing war as "young men dying in the prime" of their life, and "killing a man you don't even know well enough to hate."

Musically, the album runs deep with power rock, even heavy metal, melding into softer pieces as appropriate.  The story includes the anger of abandonment, dark angst and family stories, regrets and inevitably, conclusions.  The son left behind grows to resent the constant, singular reminder that he has his Father's Eyes.  The soldier realizes "All The King's Horses and all the king's men have made it perfectly clear that they don't want to pick me up again."

synerGy has taken a bold and intriguing path with this album, making statements and telling a story, set to music which expresses with clarity the emotion of each character in this rocking, operatic opus.  More info may be found at www.synergymakingangels.com

“i’ve Got an idea...”

dave hayden says this to me about four years aGo, something about a Guy who served in vietnam and an event that occurred there that will affect him for the rest of his life - his relationships, his dealinGs with family, his demons and his reGrets, ... and let’s end it with his loved ones maybe Gathered around his deathbed and we can have a sonG from each of their perspectives.

 “...ok”

so here we have "makinG anGels" and just to be clear, “makinG anGels” is a nicer way of sayinG “killinG people”.

four years later, workinG an hour and a half each week on a wednesday niGht, it’s finally finished.  writinG sonGs is somethinG that we’ve always loved to do, but the task of writinG fifteen of them that follow a narrative and (hopefully) make sense as a story to the listener was particulary dauntinG...

so here it is and we hope you like it as much as we do.
it’s about a man’s life and a traGedy and dealinG with the aftermath of it.  it’s about Giving life, takinG life, livinG life and ultimately losinG life.   it’s about fallinG in love, fallinG out of love, fallinG down and climbinG up again.   it’s the story of a man.

Good idea dave.
